LIVING IN THESSALONIKI

Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, boasts a population of approximately one million people. Situated in the northern part of the country, in the region of Macedonia, it lies 550 km north of Athens. Thessaloniki serves as a major economic, industrial, commercial, and political hub for Greece but also as a major transportation hub for southeastern Europe. Its bustling commercial port plays a crucial role in connecting Greece to the broader Southeast European region.

The city offers a relaxed lifestyle complemented by an exceptional culinary scene. Thessaloniki is renowned for its restaurants and ouzeries, many of which are considered among the best in Greece. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the city's cafés, where they can savor traditional dishes while soaking in panoramic views of Mount Olympus.

Thessaloniki is also a vibrant cultural centre, hosting a wide range of festivals and events. The Thessaloniki International Trade Fair is a prominent event, while the Thessaloniki International Film Festival is recognized as one of the most important film festivals in southeastern Europe. The annual "Demetria" festival features a diverse array of music, theatre, dance, and art exhibitions, and the "International Festival of Photography" takes place each year with exhibitions held in museums, historical landmarks, and galleries across the city.

For history enthusiasts, Thessaloniki offers a wealth of ancient ruins, Roman and Byzantine sites, and museums. Just a short drive away, the ruins of Vergina, including the tomb of Philip II (father of Alexander the Great), attract thousands of visitors annually.

For those who love the outdoors, Thessaloniki is ideally located near some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches and natural landscapes, particularly in Chalkidiki. The region’s stunning scenery offers an idyllic setting for sun-seekers and nature lovers alike.

Thessaloniki is also an educational hub, home to two of Greece's largest universities, as well as an international university, a U.S.-affiliated private college and the only international school in Northern Greece. The city attracts students from across Greece and the Balkans. Additionally, Thessaloniki hosts consulates, cultural centres, and honorary consuls from various countries, further enhancing its international profile.
